Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls
Why chase when you can be?
Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls
“Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you’re used to…”
And when you stop chasing waterfalls there are some other things you could stop chasing too.
More times than not, chasing anything is a choice.
If you are one of those people who are constantly chasing after happiness and peace, I have some news for you: it is not worth the effort…
While it can be tempting to think that if you just keep striving and trying, eventually something will make your life perfect and peaceful, this simply isn't true and there are a few reasons why.
First, no matter how successful or contented you become in life, there will always be something else to strive for. Once you reach a certain level of achievement or contentment, it's easy to start comparing yourself with others who appear to have more or be happier than you. This creates an unattainable goal that you can never quite reach, making it harder to find true happiness, making the chase never ending…
Second, our idea of what constitutes happiness and peace is constantly changing. This means that even if you manage to attain a certain level of stability or contentment in one area of your life, something else will come up that requires your attention and energy. The pursuit becomes an endless cycle which leaves little room for true fulfilment and joy, making the chase never ending…
Finally, chasing after these things can take away from the moments in life we should be savouring.
Instead of taking the time to appreciate all we have already achieved or all we already have, we focus on what we don't have and what comes next instead. This not only takes away from the present but also keeps us from enjoying the moments when happiness and peace are actually within our reach.
So instead of endlessly chasing after these things, why not take a step back and look around you? Appreciate the beauty in each day, cherish your relationships and try to find joy in the small things. That's where true satisfaction lies - not in striving for something that may never be attained.
Instead of chasing happiness and peace - be happiness and peace.
